When the Supreme Mother and Supreme Father separated Creation from the Void, they also created the gods, beings of incalculable power who wielded cosmic energies far beyond the petty comprehension of mere mortals. The gods were supposed to preside over Creation with unmatched wisdom and knowledge.

Well, that was the idea.

But what is Death – a god of terrible majesty and splendour – supposed to do when his daughter asks for a pony? Is he really supposed to just go out and get a mortal one? Like that’s going to work. It’ll keel over and die in a couple of decades. No, his daughter deserves something better, a pony truly worthy of her divine heritage, which means he’s going to have to get a little bit creative.

And then there’s Bureaucracy. The Supreme Mother and Supreme Father might have given rise to Creation, but Bureaucracy is the one who has to keep everything running smoothly. But that’s easier said than done when there are hundreds of gods and countless mortals to consider – none of whom understand the importance of filing paperwork in triplicate. Luckily, not even gods can escape the awesome power of divine paperwork.

And let’s not forget gods like Mayhem, Mischief, and Rabble. Their names speak for themselves. When the three of them take a holiday in the mortal world at the same time, trouble is right around the corner.

Divine Assistance is a collection of fourteen short stories about the gods and their attempts to manage Creation. There are souls to claim, mortals to woo, and even the occasional city to smite. After all, what’s life without a little divine assistance?

I love the characters. Often god characters follow one of two tendencies: Either they seem human to a fault and lack any sort of godliness; or they are so overpowered and godly that any situation they find themselves in is completely absurd. Rarely have I found such well created god characters, they have their own godly conundrums while at the same time they have to take care of business pertaining the mortal realm.
Also, I like the short story format. I realize that to some people short stories may seem like outlines for bigger grander stories or novelettes, but sometimes the best comes in small packages. I can easily see any of these characters in a full novel, Pratchet or Gaiman style, but I do not think there is a need for such. Its refreshing when you change from one character to another, and leaves you with a yearning to know more of them. As opposed to reading a gazilion pages about a couple of very well defined and aspect enclosed characters, which unless written masterfully it can get pretty boring very quickly.

Divine Assistance The Divine Assistance Series Book 1 edition by L G Estrella Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Can't really explain why I enjoyed this book so much. Perhaps it was the amusing premise that the gods sometimes have the same problems that mortals do - just on a different scale.

Should mention that this work is really a series of loosely interconnected stories rather than a novel. I wished that it was longer but am still hoping to see additional volume(s) in the near future.
Writers should have their own style. L.G. Estella has his own inimitable style. It really saddens me when I see books advertised as "in the style of" or "if you love so-and-so, you'll love this." What happened to originality?
Funny thing. I read Book Two first before Book One. But I stand with what I said in my review for Book Two - if the author does intend to create his own myths and legends. The appearance of Book Two does reinforce that suspicion. But make no mistake, I like this author's work. Just couldn't find his other books on - they're marked unavailable.
Estrella is one of my favorite authors and her (his?) series on the necromancer is a must read. But while I found many of the short stories in this collection initially enjoyable, I really didn't like it on the whole. I would have preferred a novel. The varied collection of gods and characters felt diluted with little real depth. It would have been better if she (he?) focused on a smaller cast of characters.
I love L.G. Estrella's take on Greek mythology. The author provides us with short stories about the various Gods and Goddesses, but the focus tends to be on the lesser known godlings. The stories are delightful. I hope that this is just the first of several books.
This is exactly what I was looking for and what I occasionally need since I can't stand the mindless drivel that is on television these days. It is reading that is light, humorous, entertaining, yet interesting enough not to be a waste of time. The characters are great and the stories are all loosely tied together into a book that can be easily put down when necessary but that you really want to pick up and continue reading. I only wish it was longer. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in the series!
If Greek mythology had been this well written, and as funny, I'd remember more of it. This is a delightful collection of stories featuring gods & demigods. The writing is very good. It is easy to read. And it is quite funny. I also like it because there are NO tragedies, such as the ancient Greeks like. Even a dedicated monotheist such as myself can enjoy a pleasant story.
Full disclosure...I am an L.G. Estrella fan. I love the clever writing style, the dry humor (where applicable), and the story structures. That being said I didn't jump right onto this book when it appeared on my list. I'm not sure why I hesitated because the book is really fun! Dry, clever, touching...how does one make Death nice and Annihilation fun?!?! There may be folks out there who wouldn't like this book but I suspect it's because they take things too seriously to begin with. For the rest of us...I recommend this book and it's sequel.
