Missing September 1870 – Chinese Mail Order Bride, Mei Ling. Last seen boarding a train to San Francisco, California…
Hasn’t been seen since.
Rain Deerfield, free-born woman, half-breed tracker for the missing minority class and bounty hunter for the United States Militia is on a search that hits close to home. Her childhood friend, Mei Ling, is among the hundreds of missing in the San Francisco territory. Could it be a coincidence or was all the missing somehow connected?
After advertising and paying for a mail order bride, handsome Dr. Wen Da Yang’s potential “wife,” Mei Ling, never arrives to his home, Alcatraz, “Island of the Pelicans.” Feeling he was duped of a bridal trousseau and train fare, Wen gives up on the idea of a wife and instead searches for the perfect domestic.
Miss Rain Deerfield embarks on the old abandoned military fortress and none too soon in Wen’s opinion. With the arrival of his new housekeeper, his serene world as he has known it is turned completely upside down with intrigue as one unexplained ghostly encounter after another occurs.
Is Dr. Yang’s island home truly inhabited by ghosts or is there something more sinister going on?

I am normally not a fan of historical romance stories but this one as Asian male/African American woman spin. Right there I was hooked. What I love about Ms. McCarver is the amount of research that she does for her novels, I always learn something new. When I read her words I can close my eyes and see a movie in my mind. She makes me get emotionally invested the characters and their struggles. Wen was sexy and very much a man of great moral character integrity. Rain was a beautiful woman who had strength of character and a spirit to survive about all else. These were characters that I could cheer on and be happy with how their story ended.Wonderful!!

A very good book. A historical interracial romance novel that contains a little mystery , humor, paranormal and racism. All well put together to make this a book worth reading.
This is a great book. It showed the worst about people and the best. And the sex scenes were a dream great job.
Sad masterpiece, that is the only way I can think to describe this book. Don't get me wrong, it's a very interesting read. In fact I rather enjoyed it! Sad to say, America still have a ways to go. In terms of accepting and appreciating everyone for their differences, and see the beauty in it. Thank you, Shiree McCarver. I continue to enjoy your work, well done. I look forward to your next book.
My daughter, whom I purchased this book for is very pleased. She said it was a good book with a great price.
Ms McCarver hit the ball out of the field, this novel is a mixture of mystery and romance. The two main characters "Rain and Wen" are real to me. The historical aspects of the story is well research. I have purchased all of Ms McCarver books and the money is well spend.
I knew it would be just as good as her other books, AMBW, but after reading all the books by this author I loved this one the most, one of her better love stories featuring a loving AM and a hell of a strong BW...the live they shared, and once again they were able to love and protect each other loved it once again, I will gave to do reread snow I think I own all the AMBW stories written to date, Shiree need some new books, thanks again.
I loved the book. Rain was a complex character who grew as the story unfolded. Her love for adventure and gutsy attitude assisted in this story that mainly took place on Alcatraz island in a time when women of color were seen as servants. The lead male character Wen was a physician where most Asian descendants were seen as railroad workers. His character was likable from the beginning and balanced Rain throughout the book.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical settings with twists.
